Creating Safety in the Home

Caring for someone at home and managing your own life can be a daunting task. Taking the necessary precautions to ensure the home is safe can save a trip to the emergency room, a stay at a rehabilitation facility, or placement into a nursing home.

This half-day program will review ways to engineer the home, develop ideas to organize and create contrast making areas within the home easier to identify saving time, clean up and frustration. We will also briefly review the importance of advanced care planning and how these apply to the laws within New York State. Participants will:

  • Outline simple engineering modifications to safeguard the home and prevent accidents

  • Understand the importance of having health care paperwork and advanced care planning directives such as health care proxies, do not resuscitate, living wills, etc. readily available

  • Outline ways to contrast the home enabling easier and safer navigation

  • Receive additional resources about insurance and programming that may be available to assist
