Creating Occupation: Providing Meaning and Purpose in Communal Living Environments

Having a sense of purpose and doing things during waking hours that are meaningful to us is essential to overall human health and well-being. Creating a meaningful existence in a communal living environment can be a challenge when we cookie-cutter our approaches to activities or diversional programming. Using person-centered care principles, this full day program will allow participants to understand the federal regulation under F 242 Self Determination and F 248 Activities and how to create meaningful programs that create a life worth living despite physical or mental frailty. Even if you are not bound by the federal regulations, this program will provide insight into how to create a life filled with purpose and meaning for those entrusted to your organization’s care and service model. Participants will:

  • Discuss what occupation means and why it is important

  • Explain why personhood, autonomy, choice and purpose are vital to well-being and quality of life

  • Identify the characteristics/hallmarks of creating occupation

  • Discuss federal regulations in regard to activity and how they translate into person-centeredness

  • Identify the components of an all hands on deck approach toward creating meaning
