A Tribute to Susan Berta
Susan Berta RN, who ended her earthly race years ago, is the beautiful soul who back in the early 90s, first introduced me to the philosophy of person-centered care and The Eden Alternative® as a model for achieving such practices within the organization I managed.
That introduction would later cultivate into a friendship and would in fact change the trajectory of my career path forever. Soon after, I would leave operations to become the executive director of a three year grant funded by the John R. Oishei Foundation, educating thousands of people all over the country on person-centered care, with a primary focus within Western New York State. This work would eventually culminate into the University at Buffalo's Institute for Person-Centered Care, the first of it's kind in the nation.
Susan not only introduced me to this philosophy of care, she also facilitated the meeting of several wonderful change agents who I still engage with today. These individuals took me under their wing and forever changed the way I viewed aging and directed care practices.
This woman, this beautiful soul, changed the culture of care within the walls of many organizations and within the hearts and minds of many caregivers everywhere; she was very passionate about her work.
Susan, I never told you enough how your glorious heart changed mine forever. I know that your light is one of the brightest in the heavens and I’m indebted to you and your constant reminder of the importance of the road less traveled.
